Aims and scope of the workshop:
Energy systems around the world are transitioning towards sustainable energy to reduce emissions and limit the effects of climate change. Energy-system models (ESMs) are often used to support policymakers, system operators or investors, but much less to inform energy-technology developers. However, technology developers could also benefit from guidance provided by ESMs, e.g., on the probability of a sufficient return on investment or requirements for novel technologies from the perspective of the system or market.
This workshop, organised by EERA’s Joint Programme “Energy Systems Integration” (JP-ESI), is therefore aimed at fostering collaboration between energy-systems modellers and technology developers. The workshop will (i) provide a brief overview of ESMs, (ii) discuss how they can be used to support technology development and (iii) discuss how market design and regulation affect future prospects of technologies under development.
JP-ESI invites members of all JPs focussing technology development (e.g., JP Energy Storage, JP Wind, JP Geothermal, or JP CCS) to pitch challenges from their perspectives and raise questions they have for energy systems and market research. The workshop will provide the opportunity to discuss such questions in focus groups, each bringing together researchers from technology development on the one hand and energy systems and markets on the other hand. Besides identifying opportunities for how ESMs and expertise in energy markets and regulation can be used to address questions raised by technology developers, the workshop will identify future research requirements, particularly focussing on technologies in early development stages.
